Homocysteine (Hcy) is a non-essential, sulfur-containing, non-proteinogenic amino acid. It is synthesised by the transmethylation of the essential, diet derived amino acid methionine (MET) found in meat sources, nuts, soy and beans. This is the only way in which homocysteine is produced in humans.
