Description
L-Carnosine (beta-alanyl-L-histidine) is a naturally occurring, non-toxic dipeptide (combination of two amino acids). It is found in (for example) muscle tissue and the brain, where it protects against glycosylation, cross-linking and oxidation. Carnosine is primarily found in long-living tissues such as nerve and muscle tissue. Nutritional sources of carnosine are meat, fish and poultry. Vegetarians do not, or scarcely, get any dietary carnosine. Absorption of carnosine from food is around 30-70%, depending on the quantity and composition of the amino acids. This supplement from Bonusan contains purified carnosine, which has an excellent rate of uptake in excess of 70%.

Carnosine protects against the symptoms of ageing. It benefits tissues by protecting their proteins against carbonylation and glycosylation. Carnosine is a powerful antioxidant and membrane protector. In relation to the antioxidant protection of cell membranes, carnosine is considered to be the water-soluble equivalent of vitamin E. Carnosine also protects the skin against ageing. As a powerful antioxidant, carnosine prevents cross-linking of proteins, an example of which is the cross-linking of collagen in the skin. Furthermore, carnosine protects nerve tissue and is particularly important for practitioners of sport and for other people whose muscle function requires extra attention. It supports muscle function by improving muscular contraction.

Usage
Take 1 to 2 capsules twice a day at least half an hour before a meal. Avoid taking the capsules with food rich in protein.

Synergism
Carnosine works together with other antioxidants, such as vitamin C, coenzyme Q10 and, primarily in the membranes, with vitamin E. Carnosine has a sparing effect on these antioxidants. Supplementing with (relatively low doses of) these nutrients could thus further intensify the effect of carnosine. Any vitamin E deficiency could in the short term be offset by carnosine. Extra zinc probably works synergistically on carnosine’s effects on the nervous system.

In addition to this product, a good basic diet is recommended, as is basic supplementation of Multi Vital Forte, Vitamin C 1000 ascorbate complex and Omega 3 liquid (or Omega 3 capsules).
